The combined complexity of both European land system change and the proposed construction of the road map for future land management, requires a transparent project organisation. The innovative VOLANTE research is therefore structured in three modules, centred on the research foci: improving understanding of the Processes underpinning land use change, the refinement of Assessment tools, and the development of policy relevant Visions that help in the identification of sustainable development pathways. A fourth, coordination module covers both project management and the scientific coordination between the other modules.

The project duration is 4.5 years. The first year is dedicated to the review of methodology and available data, and the setting out of the research. The main body of research will be carried out in the second and third year. The fourth year will see the converging and final integration of all results. The last half year will be devoted to the synthesis of project findings and preparation of the VOLANTE Roadmap.
